After the heated abortion ban controversy surrounding the federal Title X funding, Planned Parenthood has come out with a new initiative known as #BansOffMyBody with a letter signed by almost 140 celebrities. The letter supporting the campaign reads: “Freedom is at the foundation of music. Access to sexual and reproductive health care is about that same freedom. Because no one is free unless they control their own body.”
The 140 celebrity signees include Lady Gaga, Lizzo, Billie Eilish, Ariana Grande, Bon Iver, John Legend, Dua Lipa, Troye Sivan, Megan Thee Stallion, and more. Together, they urge the public to support women’s reproductive rights to healthcare, and to go against bans of legal abortion.
Planned Parenthood will also be collaborating with music festivals to spread awareness regarding anti-choice measures that were previously passed in some states. The organization‘s president Alexis McGill Johnson said in a statement that they are grateful to these artists for putting their platforms to a good use, “to declare that our bodies are our own.” She continued, “If they are not, we can never be truly free or equal.”
