The Breakdown: Blue Ivy Carter may have been born into superstardom, but she attends a traditional in-person school in Los Angeles, where Beyoncé and Jay-Z actively participate in her education.
Blue Ivy Carter might be pop culture royalty, but on school mornings she’s a regular student. Blue’s life has been a topic of conversation since her birth in 2012, thanks to the success of her parents. Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s firstborn wasn’t just born, she arrived in full superstar fashion. Delivered at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, Blue’s birth instantly became a trending topic.
Beyoncé gave birth in a private suite reportedly designed just for her, complete with tight security and total privacy. Rumors swirled that the couple shut down an entire hospital floor, although their reps denied it. Still, they made sure nobody got close to their baby girl without permission.
Blue is now a pre-teen, and she’s making a name for herself. However, some fans are curious about her academic journey. The young star has been featured on several of Beyonce’s Cowboy Carter Tour stops, leaving fans to wonder if Blue is being homeschooled. Here is what we know.
Is Blue Ivy Carter homeschooled?
Blue attends in-person school, albeit at one of Los Angeles’ most exclusive private schools. Beyoncé and Jay-Z, even relocated their home base to LA in 2016 so Blue Ivy could enroll in a progressive $19,000-a-year preschool program focused on individualized learning, according to Us Weekly. Close friend Gwyneth Paltrow recommended the school and “really swayed” the Carters to make the move “all for Blue Ivy,” an insider said.
The school was identified as West Hollywood’s Center for Early Education, an elite independent institution (preschool through 6th grade) with a mere 6% acceptance rate. Despite their megastar status, Beyoncé and Jay-Z have been hands-on school parents. According to sources, one of them always does drop-off or pick-up, Jay-Z attends PTA meetings, and they’re active in the school community.
Beyoncé even gave a surprise live performance at Blue’s school fundraiser gala in 2016, wowing fellow parents as she belted out “Crazy in Love” and Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” on the elementary school stage.
Blue Ivy Carter has become a star in her own right.
Blue Ivy isn’t just hitting the books – she’s also hitting the stage (and the court). While still in grade school she became the youngest-ever winner of a BET Award and earned a NAACP Image Award for her contributions to “Brown Skin Girl,” a song she recorded with her mom. She also joined Beyoncé on the Renaissance World Tour, first appearing on stage in Paris in May 2023 to perform choreography in front of a sold-out stadium.
And it’s not just music and dance stealing her heart; Blue Ivy has immersed herself in sports and arts at school, too. She played on her school’s volleyball team and has taken up basketball, all while exploring creative hobbies like painting, fashion and poetry. According to her grandmother, Tina Knowles-Lawson, who sang praises in a birthday tribute.
“Knowing you and your personality now, I realize that you needed your own day because you were such a queen and you are so very special,” Tina wrote. “You can sing, dance, play basketball, play volleyball, paint, draw, sculpt, sew, write poetry, write songs, create, act, play the piano.”
