Nicki Minaj called out the BET Awards on Twitter this Thursday after seeing the news that the show just received its lowest ever ratings.
The Numbers And The Shade
Music News Facts tweeted the numbers on Thursday. The award show received 2 million views this year, compared to ratings as high as 10.6 million in 2009, and 5.8 million viewers for the 2017 show (the most recent before Sunday).
Nicki Minaj pinned the drop in viewership on the mistreatment of artists and people who have worked on the show.
The BET awards have yet to respond to Minaj’s tweet.
Why Nicki And BET Have Bad Blood
For those wondering what Minaj was referring to by calling the show spiteful and hurtful towards artists, this refers to an incident dating back to February of this year. The inclusion of “dragged by that lace” is particularly significant.
After Cardi B won for best rap album at the 2019 Grammy‘s someone at the BET twitter account thought it would be a good idea to tweet “meanwhile, Nicki Minaj is being dragged by her lacefront.” Minaj responded to the disrespect by quickly announcing that her label Young Money will not be a part of any future BET ventures.
This tweet was then followed by a statement from the media giant, apologizing profusely .
“BET loves Nicki Minaj. We have supported her from the very beginning of her career and will continue to do so moving forward. Nicki has paved the way for so many performers and has solidified her place as one of the most powerful figures in the music industry.
Unfortunately, the respect we have for Nicki was violated by this post that should never have been written. The post does not reflect how we feel about Nicki. And further does not reflect our company values. We deeply apologize for the hurt, disappointment and confusion that this post has caused. We are committed to doing everything we can to address the situation.
We are also conducting an internal audit to assure these types of posts are not published again. We have apologized to Nicki and her team. The post has been removed and we have taken additional appropriate action. We understand Nicki’s position and look forward to continuing our dialogue with her.
Finally, we apologize to all of her fans. This should have never happened.”
So it seems that in this case, Nicki Minaj had the last laugh.
