Who is Jazzmyne Jay (Robbins)?

Jazzmyne Jay is a plus-sized fashion model who became an overnight sensation on social media from her appearance in New York’s Fashion Week. Immediately, online media such as Buzzfeed and Today jumped at their opportunity to listen to the 27 year-old’s story as a plus-sized model.

“For the past 20 years, I’ve told myself I am not ‘good enough’ to wear a bikini to the beach,” she said on her Instagram. “I went out and wore this because I don’t have to limit myself to just plus-size high-waist swimsuits. This is me, in a bikini, and I F**king love it.”

Her powerful statement gleamed with confidence and related to many through the uncomfortable divide of social norms. Jazzmyne is the voice for many.

“I grew up just being around a lot of girls who were super thin and super blonde and super white,” she told Buzzfeed. “I idolized them and their figures more than I appreciated my own.”

In American culture especially, there has been and still is a great struggle for people to accept all different kinds of cultures for who they are, naturally. The concept of what is deemed  “beautiful” in a society, and thus “accepted” is ever-changing over different decades, time periods, ethnicities, races, location, family, friends, media, and basically everything and anything. 

The Los Angeles based model is redefining social norms by accepting herself for who she is, as she should! She is a leader in her own right with hundreds of thousands of followers taking the same action. She has about 330,000 followers on Instagram as well.
