On August 6, 2011, Varner's debut song "Only Wanna Give It to You" was made available. American rapper J. Cole appears in the song, which is the lead single from her debut studio album Perfectly Imperfect (2012). On the US Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, the single peaked at number 20. She was included in BET's Music Matters campaign and recognized as one of TheBoomBox's '15 Artists to Watch' in October 2011. A mixtape named Conversational Lush was published by Varner on January 23, 2012, as a prelude to her debut studio album. On January 31, 2012, Varner's second single from her debut album "Refill" was made available on iTunes. It debuted at #78 on the US Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.
