Sister duo REYNA is giving us 80’s vibes with their release, ‘Heartbeat.’ The Milwaukee-based sisters, Victoriah and Hannah Gabriela Banuelos were among the finalists in global music discovery competition held by Aloft Hotels in partnership with Universal Music Group & Brands.
While the song was released at the end of last month, their interview with Spindle Magazine sheds light on their music video’s imagery, and the meaning behind their song.
Gabriela stated that ‘Heartbeat‘ was about, “that moment right after a heartbreak when you’re feeling excruciating pain, and you just want everything to go back to normal.”
They list their influences as, “RUSH, Queen, The Police!” which definitely explains the 80’s vibes ‘Heartbeat‘ has going on!
They also don’t fail to pay homage to their ancestry as Victoriah explains:
-“Being bicultural in this country is a funny thing. To Americans, you’re never fully American and to Mexicans, you’re never really Mexican. It gives me a feeling of never truly belonging and the need to create my own identity. I think we have poured that feeling into our music, and hopefully people that feel the same way can find a sense of belonging too.”

Since winning the competition, REYNA has released singles with a combined streaming of over 3 million on Spotify. They opened for groups such as Chvrches, Death Cab for Cutie, Kesha, Coast Modern, and The Naked and Famous.
They were also recognized by Billboard during Pride Month as one of 12 LGBTQ Artists to Discover.
We’re looking forward to hear their future projects, in the meantime, check out ‘Heartbeat‘ below.
