Zazie Beetz has attracted a loyal fanbase thanks to her likable personality and versatile acting roles. This has seen her earn major parts in a variety of top-rated projects in the world of entertainment.
Continue reading below for a list of the star’s best roles to date.
Domino – ‘Deadpool 2’
Even though she had been previously cast in several movies, Deadpool 2 is considered to be the project that thrust Beetz into Hollywood stardom. In the film, the talented Beetz plays the role of Domino – one of the few Black superhero characters ever featured in a movie.
Domino’s superpower is luck. In a Pride Magazine interview, the actress stated, “We too are strong and intelligent and can be viable for roles like this as well” – in support of the casting of more Black women in powerful superhero roles. In addition to bringing her strong and relatable personality to the role, Beetz was also rocking her natural hair!
Sophie – ‘Joker’
After her success in the second installment of the Deadpool franchise, Zazie Beetz decided to take another part in the world of comic book movies — switching to DC to play the role of Sophie Dumond in the Batman spinoff Joker. Sophie is a single mother who lives next to the character who later turns into the Joker. In addition to her powerful acting skills, Beetz also adds an element of diversity to the film's roster of mostly white stars.
Van – ‘Atlanta’
In this popular comedy series, Beetz plays Van – the on-again-off-again girlfriend of Earn (Donald Glover). In the show, Beetz’s character starts as a responsible mother who is raising a child and holding down a steady job. However, as the show progresses, the audience gets to see Van embark on a journey of self-discovery – similar to what the male characters on the show have been going through since the start.
As the only recurring female character in the movie, Beetz does a great job of making sure that Van’s character shines through in the middle of everything that the guys are doing. Beetz’s in-show character generates a lot of emotions and reactions from the cast as well as the audience. Beetz got so into her character that she even had to defend Van on her Instagram against any attacks directed at her during her journey of independence and self-discovery!
Mary Fields – ‘The Harder They Fall’
This Black cowboy Western follows a fictional storyline using real historical Black personalities. Beetz stated that she took the part because she loved how the movie went against the conventional portrayal of cowboys – as mostly white. Speaking to the UK Times, she stated, “The fact that we have been erased from the general portrayal of the old west makes it seem radical to introduce us into the narrative.”
In reality, most cowboys were Black women. In the movie, Beetz plays the role of the first female star-route mail carrier in the United States. The actress did great in embodying this iconic character — and will continue to embody strong female characters for decades to come.
