Doechii’s Label Invested in Her Artistry, and the Music Industry Should Take Notes

The Breakdown: Rapper and singer Doechii's impeccable rhymes caught the attention of one of the industry’s top labels. The lyricist has shared her financial struggles with her fans.

When someone like Doechii enters the hip-hop space, being totally different from the norm, it’s nearly impossible not to pay attention to what they have to say.

Tampa’s very own has since drawn comparisons to Missy Elliott and due to her playful sounds and eclectic style. While being among the celebrated female artists is no small feat, Doechii has carved out her own lane and is moving in it in her own quirky way. Her label felt the same way and scooped her up, taking her off the TikTok streets.

Who is Doechii signed to?

Although Doechii seemed like an overnight success, her journey to stardom was far from easy. In February 2025, after accepting her Grammy for Best Rap Album for "Alligator Bites Never Heal," a video she posted on her YouTube channel in 2020 resurfaced. In the video, Doechii shared how she was fired from her job and saw her firing as a sign to keep pursuing her music.

“So I got fired today," she revealed. "Either way, Imma be straight. I think tomorrow I'm just gonna go to a whole bunch of like studios, and like ask if they have any internships open."

"At this point, I have nothing to lose,” she added. “I literally have nothing to lose. I have no place. I have no job. I have no children. I'm just gonna do it. I'll let you know how that goes."

One year after publishing her video, Doechii met Anthony "Moosa" Tiffith Jr., president of Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE), who encouraged her to move to Los Angeles. According to NBC News, he even offered up his cousin's apartment as a place to stay. In March 2022, Doechii signed to TDE and Capitol Records, making history the first female rapper to join the label's roster. IKTR! Other TDE artists include Kendrick Lamar, SZA, and Schoolboy Q.

The “Alter Ego” performer opened up more about her past struggles in her acceptance speech to reflect on the sacrifices she made to thrive in her career.

"I put my heart and my soul into this mixtape,” Doechii shared onstage. “I bared my life. I went through so much.”

"I dedicated myself to sobriety,” she added. “And God told me that I would be rewarded, and that he would show me just how good it could get."

Doechii’s net worth grew in a short amount of time.

According to Celebrity Net Worth, Doechii has a net worth of $4 million. The “Persuasive” artist’s net worth came from her speedy rise in the music industry, beginning with her TikTok fame. Doechii gained prominence as a rapper and singer when her song, "Yucky Blucky Fruitcake," went viral in 2021, catapulting her to TikTok fame. She continued growing her audience and found herself on the music industry’s radar.

Under TDE, she released the single "Persuasive," which was later remixed featuring labelmate SZA. Her second EP, "She / Her / Black B---h," was released in 2022. The following year, Doechii received her first entry on the Billboard Hot 100 with the single "What It Is (Block Boy)" featuring Kodak Black.

After “What It Is,” Doechii continued putting out hit after hit, including “Nissan Altima” and “Boom Bap.” Then, in August 2024, she released her third mixtape, Alligator Bites Never Heal. The mixtape, which included songs about Doechii’s mental health battles, her dedication to sobriety, and her personal growth. Following the mixtape’s success, the rapper debuted an extended version of Alligator Bites Never Heal, which featured another viral hit, “Anxiety.”

“Anxiety” became a hit six years after Doechii shared the song for the first time on YouTube. In November 2019, the then-content creator recorded herself rapping to Gotye’s song, “Somebody That I Used to Know.” Doechii paid homage to her 2019 self by re-creating the YouTube video’s backdrop for the April 2025 music video.
