10 Self-Care Tips to Unwind as a Corporate Baddie

Between significant others, life, and bills — self-care doesn't fit into our everyday life. Self-care started as a trending topic once COVID-19 shook the world. Those days, I rarely took care of myself and skipped straight to my bed after work. It's time to rebrand self-care and how we start taking care of ourselves. Watching your favorite housewife throw a drink for the millionth time doesn't cut it anymore. Here are 10 self-care tips for the "Busy Black Professional."
1. Be Intentional
Set your intentions with how you would like your evening to go. This will help you achieve a relaxed mind while prepping for your evening. Once in the car, my mind goes to — "What is something I get to enjoy?" — a reward for being a corporate baddie. Sitting in rush hour can be less than ideal, but at least you'll have something to look forward to.
2. Where Are We Running to First?
Moving in the opposite direction from home leads you to places and treasures unknown. Try doing something that takes you out of a funk. I'll grab a candle from Bath and Body Works or a quick store run to grab my favorite snacks or wine. Visit a friend or a family member, add a hug and a stimulating convo to — keep stress levels down.
According to the Harvard Business Review, "Having people to lean on in times of stress can increase your ability to cope with problems independent of your network..."
3. Get Comfy
Loosen up and remove those stiff work clothes. In the name of self-care, comfy clothes like my sweats are a must. Thank me later.
4. Mood Lighting
Your eyes are strained by the end of the day, and they need a break. In an era of finding lighting, choose your fighter. You can use candles to dim. A blog in Block Blue Light states, "Pure red and amber light bulbs are best as they help to create a relaxed and ambient environment that is conducive to sleep." Your eyes deserve to be treated with love.
5. Set the Plate
Attention. You have not clocked out officially until your food sits ready in front of you. Whether that's takeout or you're a regular Martha Stewart — feed yourself.
6. Entertain for One
Now, you should watch a favorite show or engage in a movie. If you're not up for it, there are millions of podcasts to keep yourself company. I listen to advice from Shan Boodram's podcast, Lovers and Friends.
7. Cleanse that Space
A decluttered space speaks for itself.
8. Skincare
Invest in skincare. This will help elevate your skin and give you a spa-like feel a few hours before bed. Your face will thank you in the morning.
9. Prepare for a New Day
It can come back to bite us if you scramble in the morning looking for an outfit. It's better to prepare the night before.
10. Unwind
Fluff up that pillow for extra coziness, and scroll a little on social media — be mindful of screen time. Enjoy books to balance out the noise. Whatever you do, happy self-caring!
