In 2020, SZA’s love life came into focus when Drake mentioned that the two used to date — a claim that the “Snooze” hitmaker would go on to confirm later.
As one of the big names in today’s R&B scene, SZA has built up a reputation for singing about love and relationships. Her albums always seem to touch on matters relating to losing love, falling in love, or being in love or all that together. However, she has always kept a lid on her love life. In the wake of the recent revelations, here’s a brief breakdown of the famed singer’s dating history.
Drake
As mentioned above, the “Mr. Right Now” star hinted at his romantic history with SZA in the 2020 release. The “Hit Different” singer responded by confirming the claims on her social media. The R&B singer posted on X, “So It was actually 2009 lol” as a correction to Drake’s claim in his verse that they were together in 2008. This was in an attempt to remove any doubts that she was underage at the time – she even continued by stating that the relationship didn’t involve “anything underage or creepy.”
Speaking to Rolling Stone, the “Kill Bill” hitmaker was adamant that the relationship was not serious, saying, “It wasn’t hot and heavy or anything. It was like youth vibes.” She finished by saying that what they had was so childish. The two have remained on good terms since their casual fling. They even collaborated on a project titled “Slime You Out” in 2023. The song debuted at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 and is part of the rapper’s new album.
Khelani
A video of SZA and Khelani holding hands as they attended a party hosted by Rihanna sent tongues wagging about their relationship. Earlier in the same year, the two had been spotted hanging out in the company of Lizzo. And, when Khelani came out on being gay via TikTok, rumors about her interactions with SZA started circulating. However, no confirmation about any existing relationship between the pair has ever been made. Furthermore, the “Shirt” singer has never talked about her sexuality in public.
Bill Nye
There is no indication that SZA ever dated Bill Nye. However, rumors abounded that the popular science educator was the cheating partner that got killed in the R&B star’s hit song “Kill Bill.” Pictures of the pair together posted online in late 2022 kicked off the joke rumors. In a caption on X, the singer replied, “To hell .. yall gotta go to hell,” in response to the rumors.
Impact of SZA’s Past Relationships On Her Life & Music
Speaking to Rolling Stone, the “Snooze” singer talked about how her past relationships had changed her approach to love. She explained, “I feel like I have more to offer.” The singer continued to say that she believed in being herself when she met the person with whom she envisioned being in a relationship.
