Rapper Saweetie's Style Evolution Is Icy Diamonté Quiava Valentin Harper, popularly known as Saweetie, is one of hip-hop’s fastest-rising stars. The rapper and singer has been signing deals and making waves since her debut song “ICY GRL” was released in 2017.
The viral hit now has over 134 million views on YouTube and was instrumental in bringing the Bay Area native to fame. Since then, Saweetie has been doing music and building a brand that most fans know as ‘The Ice Girl.’
And when it comes to her brand, her fashion is a massive part of it. Here is a deep dive into Saweetie’s fashion journey and how the singer is influencing trends.
“Can't stop, won't stop.” Everyday Saweetie embodies these lyrics by releasing hit songs and serving incredible looks on red carpets.. Even before Saweetie’s rise to fame — before she was decked out in diamonds and extravagant outfits — the singer had always been stylish.. During an Amazon Live in 2021, Saweetie recalled memorable fashion moments while still in school.
"[When] I was in middle school, everybody had the classic logo bras. I loved wearing them under a cute blazer or coordinating with a set under a jacket,” she said. “All of my favorite women rocked Calvin Klein. If you had Calvins, you were the one and not the two!"
It is safe to say that Saweetie is more than a musician. She’s a fashion icon who, apart from releasing hit after hit, serves look after looks from casual with sneaker outfits to glamorous, classy looks on red carpets— she simply never fails to turn heads.
In an interview with Forbes in 2020, Saweetie admitted to being a fashion girl and that she had started studying fashion, which explains why her fashion has been elevating.
Saweetie’s Influence on The Fashion Industry
The artist has always found a perfect balance with her outfits, and thanks to her involvement in the fashion industry, her fans can too. The “My Type” singer has had a few collaborations with UK retailer PrettyLittleThing, one of the fast-fashion brands.
Her first collaboration with the brand, in 2019, featured a 59-piece size-inclusive collection created for girls who love the bling but also want something sporty and comfortable. The collection sold out within 24 hours of being released, but that shouldn’t be surprising considering the influence the fashion icon has.
Saweetie: A Fashion Icon
There's very little Saweetie’s haters can hate on. When it comes to rocking fits, the artist does equally well as she does with spitting bars. Not too long after quarantine, the singer turned her living space into a studio serving her fans with incredible viral-worthy pictures; and the fans stan. Saweetie almost always rocks every outfit she wears and is not afraid to brag a little about it.
In her song “Pretty B—h Freestyle,” the singer raps, “I’m a rapper, I just play around in fashion.”
In August 2019, the California native made waves with her head-to-toe custom bandanna outfit, styled by Sankara Xasha Ture McCain as an ode to the West Coast. Since then, fans have been seen rocking similar looks.
