No matter how dope we already know ourselves to be, Black women often deal with being told we are underqualified for leadership positions in our respective fields. In entertainment, Black female artists are routinely overlooked for awards or put under a microscope from the moment they make it big.

Lizzo has been candid about how her fame has caused unwarranted opinions about her music, her leadership decisions, and, more frequently, her body.

The pop star said in March 2025 that the ongoing scrutiny she received online contributed to her "dark, deep depression" and a year-and-a-half-long break from music. However, after her hiatus, our girl bounced back with a new single and album.

Throughout her self-love journey, Lizzo has shared many inspiring words to use when one needs a confidence boost. Here are a few of her best quotes.

“I just took a DNA test, turns out I’m 100 percent that b----h, even when I’m crying crazy."

Lizzo's song "Truth Hurts" took a few years to catch on, as it did not gain traction until two years after she released it in 2019. Still, some may not know how they ever went without the mantra she offered to remind us that even when we're overwhelmed, or somebody's son (or daughter) has us messed up, we always have and will be that girl.

"I love creating shapes with my body"

Lizzo's radical self-acceptance radiates in all of her music. And though she's received hate for being a plus-size woman in the past, she has always maintained her love for her body, no matter how many naysayers have wanted her to do otherwise. In a cover story with Essence, Lizzo shared how doing her work to own her body's flaws made it easier to love what she sees in the mirror and to show it to the world online. Take notes, ladies!

“I love creating shapes with my body, and I love normalizing the dimples in my butt or the lumps in my thighs or my back fat or my stretch marks," she said. "I love normalizing my Black a-- elbows. I think it’s beautiful.”

"I don't think that loving yourself is a choice. I think that it's a decision that has to be made for survival."

Self-love isn't a luxury. For many, like Lizzo, it's the only way to cope in a world obsessed with bringing you down. When that happens, Lizzo shows that loving who you are can combat the negative thoughts or beliefs you have about yourself.

"I don't think that loving yourself is a choice," Lizzo said in an essay for NBC News' Think. "I think that it's a decision that has to be made for survival; it was in my case. Loving myself was the result of answering two things: Do you want to live? 'Cause this is who you're gonna be for the rest of your life. Or are you gonna just have a life of emptiness, self-hatred and self-loathing? And I chose to live, so I had to accept myself."

"I know I'm a queen, but I don't need no crown."

In Lizzo's 2022 song, "Naked," she shares a vulnerable take on loving who you are when you're literally and figuratively unclothed. The lyric, "Welcome to my body, I know it's nice to meet it" can be a warm mantra to love what you see when no one is watching. Additionally, it's a confidence boost to say to anyone worthy enough to see you behind closed doors.

"Never ever let somebody stop you or shame you from being yourself."

Being yourself sounds like a simple concept, yet it's so difficult for some to do, especially when you're easily persuaded to be a "cooler" version of yourself. Thankfully, Lizzo is among the celebrities brave enough to say that, although she makes choices that serve her, everyone needs to find what works for them and stick to it, since the world will judge you anyway.

"Who I am, the essence of me, and the things that I choose to do as a grown a-- woman can inspire you to do the same," Lizzo said while defending her outfit choice at a 2019 Lakers game. "They don't have to be like me — you need to be like you, and never ever let somebody stop you or shame you from being yourself. This is who I've always been, now everyone's looking at it, and your criticism can just remain your criticism."
