Jilly from Philly has graced our stages, TVs, and theatres as a singer-songwriter and actor for over 23 years. In the same light, we've witnessed her fashion journey and style evolution over the two decades she has entertained us.
Killer Curvy Girl Look
She hit the music scene with the release of her double-platinum album "Who Is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds Vol 1." At this stage of her career and life in the public glare, she dressed conservatively while infusing a sense of glamour in her outfits.
After the birth of her son, Jett Hamilton Roberts, in April 2009, she turned into a fierce fashionista more willing to show off more of her sexy side.
In the decade after, she has maintained a fierce approach to her style, embracing her curves and never shying away from wearing outfits that complement her figure.
Speaking with The Huff Post, she explained her thoughts on plus-size women, saying, "I've seen curvy girls that cower in their skin. And it's really about accepting of one's self. Men are drawn to confidence. People are drawn to confidence. So I believe whole-heartedly, it's about how you carry yourself."
Versatility is The Name of her Fashion Game
She not only excels in looking stunning in curvy girl dressing, but she also has an outstanding sense of fashion versatility. Case in point, in the lead-up to the release of "The Light of the Sun," her fourth studio album, she described her outfits in the week between June 8 and June 14 to The New York Times's Bee-Shyuan Chang.
The three-time Grammy Award winner showcased what can only be described as the epitome of versatility.
She performed for BET TV in a “Nicole Miller raspberry and black minidress. It has this graphic print that looked '80s but with a twist." She completed the look with "black heels that wrap around the ankle."
She noted that she loves "shoes that wrap around the ankle. They're that half-classy, half-slutty look. I also had on fishnet stockings, not a full-on version like you're walking the street, but a small fishnet, and I wore an extra layer of sheer stockings underneath."
Within the same week, she switched her style up for travels. While traveling, she said she crafted an ensemble that prioritizes comfort without compromising her styling. "I like to be comfortable, but there also has to be an element of glamour in my look."
She wore "an All Saints oversized cream crochet sweater — I've been feeling the neutrals lately — a pair of blue DKNY skinny jeans and Jimmy Choo high-top bejeweled sneakers. They're silver and gold and surprisingly not over the top."
If you peruse her Instagram, you'll appreciate that her style still displays incredible versatility even today.
Weight Loss and Styling
Her fitness journey has also influenced the evolution of her style. Around 2011, the singer-songwriter and actress underwent a weight-loss journey, losing 63 pounds in the process.
Scott explained how losing weight had influenced her style when she featured on the cover of the September 2014 issue of Essence (in a straight plus size line dress by Ekineyo).
Losing weight resulted in a "size "12/14 downstairs [and] 16/18 up top." She typically bought two of the same clothing items to better meet her sizing needs.
Alternatively, she takes "something that's a bit too small and just make[s] it into something else." Scott's DIYing her outfits after losing weight inspired her to launch her own clothing line.
Whether Scott is walking down the red carpet or gracing the stage while on tour, she epitomizes fashion dynamism, comfort, and glamor.
