The Breakdown: Doechii isn’t just repping queerness—she’s championing it loud and proud, using her voice, her platform, and her pen to uplift LGBTQIA+ folks.
Grammy-winning rapper Doechii has been unambiguous about her place in the LGBTQIA+ community. And while some may have missed it, the Tampa-born artist has been open about her queer identity since the beginning. Doechii now uses her platform to uplift marginalized voices. In June 2024, she joined forces with JT to pen “love letters” to LGBTQ youth, encouraging them to stay strong in environments that can feel hostile.
“My music is dedicated to all those who have encouraged me to strive for excellence and even to those who may have doubted me along the way,” Doechii wrote, per Billboard. While JT added, “When it feels like no one understands you and you just wanna give up, please hold on and stay strong.”
Doechii is now a LGBTQIA+ icon, and she makes no secret about her orientation or love for queer folk. Here is a look at how Doechii has been standing up for the LGBTQIA+ community.
Doechii is out and proud.
Doechii identifies specifically as bisexual, which she learned to accept after acquiring more “gay friends.” She told GQ that those friends helped her find the confidence to talk about her sexuality freely.
“I always knew that I was queer, and I was bisexual. But I didn't really feel comfortable talking about it, because nobody around me was gay," she said.
"So it's not like I was hiding it — but I also wasn't fully embracing it. I just started indulging myself with more friends who were like me. And that's when I could become more comfortable talking about it, because that's my normal everyday conversation now with my gay friends.”
Doechii’s self-assuredness also shines on stage and in her speeches. At the 2025 GLAAD Media Awards, where she won Outstanding Music Artist, Doechii used her acceptance speech to condemn attacks on queer rights. She also took the moment to affirm her own sense of belonging within the LGBTQIA+ community.
“Especially now that hard won cultural change and rights for transgender people and the LGBTQ community have been threatened. And I’m disgusted. Disgusted,” Doechii said. Adding, “The support and the love that I’m feeling as I accept this award from GLAAD is truly overwhelming and uplifting, and as I move forward in my life and career, enabling. It’s also a beacon to other aspiring artists to not let anyone ever block your dreams, like, ever.”
Doechii was inspired by folks like Lady Gaga.
Doechii makes sure to pay homage to the queer icons that came before her. While presenting Lady Gaga with the iHeartRadio Innovator Award, Doechii thanked the “Just Dance” singer for championing LGTQIA+ voices.
“I was considered weird, but it's OK, because things worked out,” Doechii said. “As a kid that identified as an artist, as queer, and as a Little Monster, Lady Gaga wasn't just a pop star, she was a lifeline. Gaga taught us that it was OK to be our real selves, to try new things, to try anything, to speak out and to create.”
