The Breakdown: R&B singer Coco Jones has been in the spotlight since 2011 when she joined Disney. Now she’s winning Grammys and selling out concerts with her music career. Here’s what we know about the mom, dad, and siblings who are supporting her success.
Coco Jones got her start as a Disney Channel kid, where she showed off her vocal skills on So Random! (2011) and Let It Shine (2012). But now she’s all grown up, and so is her music.

Jones has released sultry R&B hits like “ICU” (2022), which won her a Grammy for Best R&B Performance two years later and is certified platinum. Jones has continued to build her acting resume, too, with roles in Bel-Air (2022) and Vampires vs. the Bronx (2020).
The “Here We Go” songstress credits her mom for a lot of her success, so let’s get to know Coco Jones’ mother, along with her dad and siblings.
Coco Jones’ mother is a talented singer too.
It seems that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Coco Jones’ mother, Javonda Jones, has a powerful voice. As a session vocalist, she provides backup and support vocals for other artists.
Javonda played a big role in her daughter’s entry into the world of music. Jones started recording when she was only nine years old with the help of her mom. With Javonda’s support, Jones recorded and self-released an album in 2010 that kickstarted her career when it caught the attention of a Disney executive.
Jones has been outspoken about her mother’s impact on her career. She told Pop Sugar, “My mom, Javonda Jones – aka earth queen! – has been crucial to my journey in entertainment ... She figured it out when we didn’t know what to do to get me where I wanted to go.”
Mama Jones also helps her Jones navigate the music business.
Javonda is certainly a supportive mom. After Jones’ first tour show, she took to social media to cheer her daughter on. She gushed, “From beginning to end, it had me captivated. I couldn’t leave. It was amazing! Your vocals were great, you looked fabulous, the clouds behind you, the dancers, it was PERFECT.”
But Javonda’s support runs much deeper than social media. She also has extensive experience in business management and has helped to protect her daughter in the entertainment industry. It was Javonda who had Jones perform under the stage name Coco (rather than her birth name, Courtney) to legally separate her personal and professional identities. She also kept Jones from signing an unfavorable contract with Disney.
Javonda continues to be involved in Jones' career at the business end as the business manager of the entertainment company Real U Incorporated, also known as the Coco Jones Company.
Excellence is a family trait – Coco Jones’ dad is a retired NFL player.
While Jones gets her vocal talent from her mother, her father is a star in his own right, too. Jones’ dad, Mike Jones, is a retired NFL player. He was signed by the Arizona Cardinals in 1991. Over his 12-season career as a defensive lineman, he played with several teams, including the Tennessee Titans, who he won a Super Bowl with.
Like Javonda, Mike is hugely supportive of Jones’ career. In fact, Jones’ first major performance was singing the anthem at a St. Louis Rams game in 1998, where her father was playing at the time.
Mike couldn’t have been prouder, and he told ESPN, “She’s always been my baby. When she did the national anthem at a football game once, I was sweating and more nervous than I was in the Super Bowl. We have a very close family, and we call her our clutch performer.”
Mike has since retired from the NFL – he’s now a coach at Lincoln University – but he’s still a full-time supportive dad to Jones.
The other Jones siblings have followed in their father’s athletic footsteps.
Coco Jones may have pursued music like her mother, but her siblings have become athletes like their dad. Her brothers, Steven and Mike Jr., both played college football. Mike Jr. is now an NFL linebacker playing with the Atlanta Falcons. Jones’ sister, Aja, has poured her athleticism into volleyball and is currently playing at Florida A&M University.
Coco Jones is establishing herself as one of the best R&B artists of her generation, and she’s got a great family support system in her corner. With her mother’s business-savvy management and her father and siblings cheering her on from the sidelines, she’s likely got a long list of stages and accolades in her future.
