Big Freedia’s Collaboration With Black Opal Is For Everybody (Literally)

Big Freedia is breaking into the beauty world with a bold and bounce-inspired collection with Black Opal. The New Orleans native collaborated with the Black-owned beauty brand to create a “Bold Beats” line of lashes, eyeshadow palettes, and even a nail kit. When Big Freedia was asked to collaborate with Black Opal, a black-owned beauty line started by Carol Jackson-Mouyiaris and now owned by Desiree Rogers and Cheryl Mayberry McKissack, she did not hesitate. “Black Opal is the biggest Black-centric make-up line that I’m aware of,” she told Essence.

For Freedia, her collection was inspired by bounce music and culture, and each item in the line is named after a bounce beat or one of her signature catchphrases.

The five products in the collection are: the Bounce Eyeshadow Palette, Swiggle Wiggle Nails, and three eyelash styles — Girl Down, Ya Besta Believe, and Yaka Yaka. “BLACK OPAL gave me a lot of creative license,” she shared, before adding, “They were extremely helpful in teaching me how to work with cosmetic ingredients, quality control, packaging.”

When sharing her collection with her followers, Big Freedia made it very clear that Bold Beats was made for everybody, literally. “On the road over the years, I saw very little gender-neutral makeup,” she told Black Enterprise. “I thought, why not develop a make-up line that’s for everyone–for all gender orientations and skin tones?”

On Instagram, she also shared the all-inclusive mission of the collection, writing, “It’s finally here! I’m so excited for the launch of my limited edition Bold Beats Collection in collab with @blackopalbeauty. This collection is all about being your best, bold, beautiful self… I can’t wait to see y’all in these beautiful products!!”

Before launching her collection with Black Opal, Big Freedia has been open about her go-to beauty products. In an interview with Bust, she revealed how she stays looking fabulous even while sweating onstage. Her go-products are Mac Lipglass, a comb, bobby pins, Versace Bright Crystal Perfume, and pressed powder.

“You don’t have to be fancy with powder,” she explained. “I find some great buys at drugstores like CVS or Walgreens. My favorite right now is Maybelline Fit Me.” Big Freedia, bringing people together through the power of a– and makeup!
