Finding the right outfit, especially when you are pregnant, can be difficult. Maternity fashion is not known for being the most stylish, however, some of your favorite celebrities are elevating maternity fashion and setting new trends — bump included.
These Black actresses, singers, and entertainers are redefining what is considered chic for pregnant women, from radiant red-carpet moments to casually strolling in the city.
Celebrating the Bump: The Bold and The Beautiful
In 2023, several Black celebrities leveled up when it came to their maternity fashion game. Here are a few of our favorites.
Ciara
At the premiere of The Color Purple, Ciara looked stunning in a white Georges Hobeika shirt, which she left unbuttoned to show off her gold leaf-covered baby bump.
“For this pregnancy, I wanted to live my best fashion life,” Ciara told Vogue. “I didn’t want to feel like I had to be a different person.”
Rihanna
While Ciara was bringing her maternity fashion game to the red carpet, Rihanna was all about street style while pregnant with her second child with A$AP Rocky.
From a faux-fur crop top with a matching long coat and a leather miniskirt for date night to a see-through maxi dress with a sequined bikini underneath, Rihanna took several fashion risks during her pregnancy and they paid off.
“I'm enjoying not having to worry about covering up my tummy. If I feel a little chubby, it's like, whatever! It's a baby,” Rihanna said previously of her maternity style. “
Keke Palmer
The Nope actress turned to her stylists, Wayman Bannerman and Micah McDonald, for some maternity fashion guidance during her pregnancy, and they delivered.
Our personal favorite: the sequined Michael Kors dress Keke wore for the 2023 New York Film Critics Circle Awards.
“Keke’s style still feels like Keke,” her stylists told Vogue. “She still enjoys wearing bold colors and fun silhouettes, so we want to make sure she continues feeling like herself, just with a little extra radiance!”
LaLa Milan
The comedian shared the exciting news of her pregnancy with a photoshoot with Essence, and it was high fashion.
Her baby bump was on full display as she velvet dusty rose two-piece ensemble, which matched her longtime boyfriend, Tyler P.’s’ light pink suit.
“I’m embracing everything that’s coming with it. It’s so cool to watch my body change with my little tenant who ain’t paying rent,” she joked with the magazine.
Black celebrities are taking risks with their maternity fashion and they are inspiring women across the globe to own their pregnancies with style. These women are embracing designer fashion and not letting a baby bump dictate who and what they wear. As we witness this style revolution, one thing is clear – maternity fashion has never been more exciting, inclusive, and empowering.
