We all know Big Freedia as the Queen of Bounce or as the voice in Beyoncé’s hit songs “Formation” and “Cozy”
Now, she is also making a name for herself in the beauty world, with her latest collaboration with the makeup brand Black Opal.
Her makeup line of eyeshadows, eyelashes, and nail kits is called Bold Beats — and inspired by her love of Bounce music and culture. Here is everything you need to know about the brand, and how it is empowering makeup lovers.
Big Freedia Wanted to Create a Gender-Neutral Makeup Line
If there is one thing we know about Big Freedia, it’s that she is always going to be herself. So, when it came to creating Bold Beats, she made sure to make it as inclusive as possible.
Freedia identifies as “gender nonconforming, fluid, nonbinary” and her collection reflects that.
“On the road over the years, I saw very little gender-neutral makeup,” she told Black Enterprise. “I thought, why not develop a make-up line that’s for everyone–for all gender orientations and skin tones?”
Big Freedia Also Wanted to Collaborate With a Black-Owned Beauty Brand
We are sure this is not the first offer Big Freedia received to launch a makeup line, but she did not hesitate when it came to working with Black Opal.
“I had been talking about doing a line of makeup for a long time,” she told Essence. “When [Black Opal] reached out to me, I was very familiar with the brand. Black Opal is the biggest Black-centric make-up line that I’m aware of.”
And Black Opal supported Freedia in unleashing her creativity when it came to creating a collection.
“BLACK OPAL gave me a lot of creative license,” she added. “They were extremely helpful in teaching me how to work with cosmetic ingredients, quality-control, packaging.”
