H.E.R, the talented American R&B sensation, whose real name is Gabriella Sarmiento Wilson, entered the music scene at the tender age of 14. With chart-topping hits like "Back of My Mind" and "Fight for You," the R&B songstress has not only captivated audiences but also amassed an impressive accolade collection, including five Grammy wins, four Billboard Music awards, and even a Golden Globe award.
With such remarkable success, H.E.R is well on her way to earning EGOT status — an illustrious honor reserved for artists who bag an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony. However, H.E.R. is able to find a balance between her demanding career and staying healthy — here’s how!
By Embracing Anonymity
Being in the limelight, especially when you’re as young, independent, and successful as H.E.R, comes with its own set of challenges. The songwriter has managed to keep the demanding aspects of fame at bay by staying anonymous. She spent the first few years of her career working diligently to shroud her identity, going to the extent of releasing an entire album incognito. Ironically, her stage name, H.E.R is an acronym for “Having Everything Revealed.”
Although fans later uncovered her identity, H.E.R safeguards her personal space by adopting a low-key profile, often sporting shades to conceal her face.
According to her, this intentional act ensures the focus remains on her music rather than on her superficial features or personal life and serves as a shield for her mental well-being in the relentless world of fame.
“I think it has allowed me to make the music the focus, and for people not to care about the superficial things or who I'm associated with, what clique I belong to—all those things that don't matter," she told Elle about her decision to wear glasses. "It's really made people focus on the music, and that's what's special about it."
Playing Her guitar
In a revealing interview with Vogue, H.E.R, disclosed that the guitar is her go-to activity for mental sanity and overall well-being. She always keeps it at her side, regardless of where she may be. The fast-rising singer first brushed with the instrument when she was 9 years old.
As a daughter to a musician father, H.E.R would sneak in to experiment with various instruments when her father’s band was on break. This exposure left her proficient in playing five distinct instruments and cultivated her love for the guitar.
Now, she finds solace through her guitar strings, and it’s her ultimate mode of self-care and wellness, telling the magazine, “I can’t do without my guitar sitting next to me, just like easy access. That’s big for me.”
Sipping on Herbal Teas and Applying Herb-Infused Oils
In the rhythm of her demanding career, H.E.R embraces holistic practices as a form of self-care. Sipping herbal teas is among her cherished holistic practices. In particular, fresh ginger tea with honey is one of H.E.R.’s favorite therapies. The musician says the tea not only helps her achieve mental clarity but also helps sooth her voice and keeps her from getting sick.
Consequently, it’s one of the things she cannot live without. Speaking of things she cannot live without, the multiple Grammy-award winner always has lavender essential oils at arm’s reach. She says the oil helps keep her calm.
Reading Poetry
Besides staying low-key, playing the guitar and sipping herb-infused teas, H.E.R regularly indulges in poetry as a form of self-care and wellness. It’s one of her profound passions since her formative years. The 26-year-old sensation always carries a poetry book wherever she goes, according to Vogue.
“I’ve also been getting back into reading poetry books,” she explained. “I’ve been carrying one with me everywhere I go. I started out songwriting by writing poems, so I’m kind of getting back to that, getting back to my roots, and I think that’s been a necessity for me lately.” Navigating this level of fame can be overwhelming, but H.E.R. does it with grace by keeping a low profile, playing the guitar, reading poetry, and always having calming essential oils like lavender at arm’s reach.
