Who is Olivia Kim? You should know this name if you are into fashion. Not only was she the vice president of creative for Opening Ceremony, but she is now the vice president of creative projects at Nordstrom, and she has just released a collaboration with Nike: The all-new “No Cover” collection showcases a wide range of apparel, footwear, and accessories in a vintage, but still fun and playful vibe that is specific to New York in the ’90s.
In a Vanity Fair interview back in September, Olivia Kim described herself as “just a little rugrat kid” back in the days: “I would hang out in Washington Square Park, and go shopping at Canal Jean Company. I would eat at McDonald’s, and I would go to Urban Outfitters because at that time Urban Outfitters was so cool.”
Growing up on Palladium and Twilo during the style decade that was immensely influential to the times that follow, Kim acquired a taste for mix-and-matching Air Maxes and Air Force 1s with baby doll tops and extra-wide JNCO jeans.
But her sense of style was just beginning to emerge. She told Vanity Fair: “I wore Air Max 90s a lot. I would graffiti the soles or do glow-in-the-dark paint on them. I would switch out my laces to make them a little bit more funky.” She added that she would even have platforms added to her kicks – in true DIY spirit.
Today, her creative eye has brought in young and emerging brands like Marine Serre and Jacquemus for Nordstrom, while she also partnered with Hermès and Chanel on in-store installations.
As for her new collaboration with Nike, the collection features 16 garments along with five classic silhouettes: Air Force 1, Air Jordan IV, Air Mowabb, Air Footscape, and Air Max 98. Speaking of her re-imagination of the iconic Nike footwear, Kim said her idea was to recreate them with a fashion twist. The accompanying campaign sees model Binx Walton, athlete Megan Rapinoe, director-writer John Waters, and Olivia Kim herself.
As for the clothes themselves, we see a heavy ’90s club kid vibe – imageries of Betty Boop, an abundance of glitter, and eye-catching fluorescent tones. The Nike x Olivia Kim “No Cover” collection officially drops on October 31, firstly exclusive at Nordstrom x Nike (NXN) stores, NXN.com, and SNKRS.com. Later on November 8 the capsule will be available at global retailers.
