Nicki Minaj is Single For The First Time In a Long Time

In a recent interview with Elle rapper Nicki Minaj discussed her feelings about being single for the first time in almost two decades.  

Minaj split from fellow performer Nas back in January after 7 months of dating. A source told Us Weekly that the split was amicable. They said that Nicki and Nas fizzled out and that “They were never in the same place at the same time, so it was hard to move their relationship forward.” 

Prior to this she was in a long term relationship with Meek Mill which ended in 2017. Nicki Minaj explained to Elle that from the age of 15 until last fall she has always been in a committed relationship.

Far from being lonely, Nicki Minaj reflected that her newly found singlehood has been a positive and empowering experience for her. After she learnt how to sleep alone something changed in her. “Becoming single was one of the things that made me feel strong and powerful. The fact that I am a young woman who doesn’t need a man for money. I don’t need a man for a job. I’ve never had to fuck for beats. I’ve never had to fuck for a record deal. I don’t have those pressures. I get up when I want, shop when I want.”

She also reflected that her relationship status was a driving force behind her upcoming album Queen. She explained that she “went through a moment where I got to know myself again, and then I went through a moment where I got to know myself as the rapper again. And then I locked [myself] in the studio.” 

This new found outlook on life promises great things for Minaj’s upcoming album which is set to drop this August.
