Earlier this week, Miley Cyrus launched a fundraiser for migrant children via Facebook. The initiative, Kids in Need of Defense (KIND), is designed to benefit migrant families in the United States and be a vital resource for their immigration to a new country. The campaign currently has raised over $35,000.
But, Who Are Migrants?
According to Settlement Services International, a migrant is “a person who makes a conscious choice to leave their country to seek a better life elsewhere.” These are people who usually leave for better employment opportunities and are permitted to return home. A migrant is short for the word “immigrant.”
While on the subject of people leaving their countries, a refugee, according to Settlement Services International, is someone who is “forced to leave their country because they are at risk of, or have experienced persecution. Some are forced to flee with no warning and many have experienced significant trauma or been tortured or otherwise ill-treated.”
KIND isn’t Cyrus’s first foray into charity work. In 2015, she debuted the Happy Hippie Foundation and teamed up with Facebook to create the “Happy Hippie Presents: Backyard Sessions.” The foundation and sessions were focused to raise funds for trans youth in America through a series of music videos to raise money.
