Getting a DM from Drake is far from reality for most but not for Jorja Smith, the 20 year old singer from Washall, West Midland. Her voice and genre, which go along the same wavelength as Amy Winehouse, landed her a collaboration with Drake; her feature in “Get it Together”, preceded by “Jorja Interlude” on More Life gave her a place in the music industry. But, it doesn’t stop there. She sang alongside the Canadian singer at The O2 Arena in London and the Barclays Center in New York, her singles “Where Did I Go” and “February 3rd” (not released) were featured on the HBO series Insecure, in October she is set to tour with Bruno Mars, was featured on the BBC Radio 1Xtra Live Lounge, and sold out her own shows in the U.S. It may seem like her fame started here but she was singing and playing the piano since age 11. At 15 she was discovered by her manager on her YouTube channel with a cover of “Too Close” by Alex Clare. Her ability to compose feelings into lyrics is transparent in her singles, some of which include “Beautiful Little Fools”, “Teenage Fantasy”, and “On My Mind” (a collaboration with electronic composer Preditah) and her collective of songs on Project 11. In an interview with Billboard, she considered herself as her own artist with a distinct voice: – “I just think I’m me. I’m Jorja”. To read more on the British singer, click here.
