H.E.R. the enthralling young singer from Vallejo, California is riding the wave of her recent album release I Used To Know Her: Part 2. Delightful, captivating, and engaging are not the only ways to describe the album, but H.E.R. herself.
The young songstress took her time on I Used To Know Her: Part 2, stretching away from her trademark sound and what we thought we knew of her from her debut R&B album. Her new sound is soulfully upbeat with deep jazzy undertones. Seeing an artist reinvent and challenge themselves is what makes their personal journey touching to those who listen.
The album is totally free from features, creating an intimate setting for H.E.R. to express herself and explore new ideas. Highlights of the album include “Carried Away,” “Take You There,” and “Lord Is Coming,” with lyrics rooted in unshakeable emotion:
-“Ain’t my fault I’m guarded
I’m good, I’ll be okay
Fronting, I don’t wanna be loved anyway
That’s why I’ll do as I say
‘Cause I had a bad case
Losing the game I never wanted to play”
“Ain’t my fault I’m guarded
I’m good, I’ll be okay
Fronting, I don’t wanna be loved anyway
That’s why I’ll do as I say
‘Cause I had a bad case
Losing the game I never wanted to play”
NPR’s Tiny Desk has made a name for itself by highlighting artists both established and up and coming. Behind the Desk artists have command of a personal setting for artists and the NPR staff in attendance. This setting is perfect for H.E.R. in support of her album, as much of it is more acoustic than her past work.
A joy to listen to and a magnetic voice and personality, H.E.R.‘s NPR Tiny Desk performance is enjoyable from start to finish.
