The zine industry is every growing as more underground creatives want to express their message and meaning through art. FKA Twigs, English singer/ songwriter, record producer, director, and dancer is now a part of the zine club.
Today she released her first zine on Instagram, AVANTgarden, introducing it with its first issue themed “ROOTS ∙ SHOCK ∙ BEAUTY”. Utilizing the multiple image function, the zine consists of 10 images surrounding braid appreciation. It delves into the history of the hairstyle and its meaning to different women. African designs, south London barbershops, and hair care product packaging, are inspiration weaved into the layout and imagery – in an interview with Dazed magazine, Twigs referenced her romanticized view of the black barbershops where she grew up.
In the interview Twigs told Dazed that “braids” were the right topic to feature in the first issue and that “it felt very natural”. After facing pressures at school to assimilate to its white culture and experiencing colorism she is ready to embrace her natural hair and she wants others to do the same. Publishing the zine on Instagram provides a platform where her followers turned readers can give her feedback and create a community.
