The 70s are back! The Queen of Funk herself, Chaka Khan, teamed up with Grammy nominated producer Switch for “Like Sugar”, the first release off Switch’s new record label Diary Records.
Bringing back the groove that got people moving, Chaka Khan and Switch’s “Like Sugar” has an infections sound reminiscent of the disco days when Chaka Khan made her debut with “I’m Every Woman”.
“Like Sugar” has already gained the hype before the release being the most sought after items at Record Store Day after the limited edition release of the track.
Producer Switch has had a long career and now wants to emulate creative freedom and ownership at his new label. After beginning his career in London’s underground club music scene, Switch headed to Los Angeles to team up with Diplo to create Major Lazer, a household name in electronic music.
While also dedicating himself to Major Lazer, Switch also worked closely with big stars including Beyoncé, Christina Aguilera, Brandy, and Santigold. After leaving Major Lazer, Switch continued his musical prowess working with artists like M.I.A.
He teamed up with his peer Sarah Ruba, co-writer for “Like Sugar”, to create Diary Records. Their goal is to reach a happy medium between musical freedom, artists’ credibility, and mainstream success.
The video also accompanied the release of the fitting music video. The unique style features an array of dancers, repetitive motions, and an onslaught of wild fashion. The credit goes to Kim Gehrig, director of the music video whose esteemed career included working with artists such as Calvin Harris and Basement Jaxx.
Chaka Khan is expected to release a full album under Diary Records, and is expected to perform a rare show at U.K’s Bestival this upcoming August. Watch the video for “Like Sugar” below!
