She starts off answering the million dollar question, “How do you get people to follow you?” The first stage is simple, test whether or not you can make the commitment to become an influencer with a real schedule. The first action is to start promoting yourself, tell your friends, family, co-workers and even random people that you are an aspiring influencer and ask them to follow you. Make sure they are not following just for a follow back, but to actually support your movement.
Throughout the book, she goes into full detail about getting brands to notice you, which means getting your digital house in order. When reaching out to someone, the first thing they’ll do is google you. Your site should be the first to pop up, Hennessy states how crucial it is to have an “about” and “partnership” page. Both should be able to tell brands who you are and what your interests are, in the end telling brands what you can bring to the table.
Let’s fast forward to getting noticed and now working with brands. How do you calculate your coins? Calculating your talent fee is how much it actually costs to create the content which includes: props, clothing, space, and hourly rate, which can be increased as you have more experience and campaigns under your belt. Hennessy also states the importance of taking out the time to respond to emails and genuinely caring about people who are trying to put you on the come up, even if its something you cannot deliver at that time.
Once you get to the end of the book, you should feel like you’re ready to conquer all and be what Hennessy calls, ” a bona fide influencer.” What’s next? Make it official and stay consistent with advertisers to create a long-term partnership and continue to collaborate! They’ll be haters along the way, but remember not many people know what influencers can be. Influencer recognition is the new wave and if you can hop on, do it right, and make a name for yourself, you too will soon be riding the biggest social media wave.
