Are Cotton Candy Grapes Worth the Hype?

Cotton candy grapes are the latest trend in food. Although they have been around since 2011, they’ve grown in popularity in recent years.
The grapes have been described as life-changing for their surprisingly accurate cotton candy taste.
Grapery, the growers and developers of cotton candy grapes explained how these grapes came about:
-“We achieved the astonishing flavor by working closely with our breeding partner and using all-natural breeding practices. We breed for flavor, continuously experimenting, trying out a wide range of cross-pollination combinations. Frankly, we were stunned when we discovered a new grape that tasted like cotton candy. But, rest assured, it was accomplished by completely natural means. We didn’t apply any ‘cotton candy flavoring’ or plant any sort of flavoring materials into the soil to attain the cotton candy flavor. It was the result of a lot of hard work, innovation and, okay, a bit of good luck.”

We at Bombshell decided to try them for ourselves. Here’s what our editors and writers thought:
-Ebony: Why does this taste like cotton candy!?
Jessica: It has that grape aftertaste.
Krys: They’re not fooling anyone.
Elysia: If I didn’t know they were cotton candy, I would just think they were really good grapes.
Cedric: They tasted really sweet, but not like cotton candy.
Me: This one bag was like $11.

I really couldn’t get past the price of the grapes because two bags of grapes for $21 had me all types of heated, especially because there’s no guarantee the cotton candy grapes would indeed taste like the carnival treat. I don’t know if it’s the particular location where I chose to buy these (Whole Foods in Chelsea), but that price tag — PHEW.
I took these grapes home and had my parents and best friend try them too.
-Momz: I don’t taste anything special about them. They taste like regular grapes.
Daddumz: They do taste like cotton candy! These are good! Where did you get these?
Ting, the bestie: OMG! Did they inject these with something??

Final verdict: The cotton candy grapes were roughly $10.50 per bag. Out of the nine of us that tried the grapes, six of us weren’t so impressed with them. After getting super-hyped up by all the tweets, I was left disappointed. To reiterate what one of our Bombshell writers, Elysia, had to say, “If I didn’t know they were cotton candy, I would just think they were really good grapes.”
