15-Minutes With Tierra Whack

Inspired by Instagram‘s 60-second video limits, Tierra Whack delivers a 15-minute audio-visual album featuring 15 songs in “Whack World“. Each video is its own little colorful world from the imagination of a very imaginative girl. But don’t get it twisted, Whack World is not a 15-minutes of fame type of ride. As Briana Younger of Pitchfork puts it “Whack World is a funhouse of minute-long vignettes, teetering between a fantastic dream and an unsettling nightmare.”
Tierra Whack brings hallucinations to life.
Her songs and visuals don’t leave you feeling like their purpose wasn’t fulfilled but your desire to hear and see more of Whack will have you realizing that something was missing in your life. Her originality certainly stands out. Whack is wacky, whimsical and eccentric in all the ways an artist can be.
Whack‘s “Dr. Seuss” plays tribute to Alice In Wonderland which is the perfect euphemism for an introduction into her world. There is an innocence in her darkness. Like a little girl who is curious to go behind the looking glass, in spite of warnings of what’s on the other side. She becomes the danger. Maybe that warning was the male dominated world of rap which she is determined to conquer in her own unique way. And she’s doing it.
You won’t find her looking to compete with the hottest female rap artists of the time, because she understands the importance of each of their ways of expression. In an interview with Joe Cascarelli of the NYTimes she says:
-“I think coming up, the male-dominated industry puts women against each other and we’re just crazy enough to go with it. But I’m not crazy enough to go with it. I want more females to join in and get the shine, and I hope to be part of the reason. Nicki and Cardi, Rico Nasty, all the Dolls. Everybody has their own aesthetic. It feels like when Lil’ Kim and Lauryn Hill and Foxy Brown and Missy and MC Lyte were all in their own lane. I love it all, I really do.”

Tierra Whack is the rap artist we need.
If you haven’t ventured into Whack World just yet, to give you an idea of where it’ll take you, she cites Quentin Tarantino, Lauryn Hill, Busta Rhymes, Missy Elliot and Eminem as influences. She says of the rappers “I’m like, these people can rap but they’re also making great hit songs. I didn’t want to just be a rapper, I wanted to be a star.”
Her line of influences can be seen in her work as she molds her inspirations into her own works of warped art. She has the makings of being cited as an influence for others for futures to come so her goal of becoming a star is most definitely within reach.
