“Not My Ex” Is Way More Than Just A Music Video

Jessie J’s new song “Not my Ex” just got revamped with a music video. In the all black and white one shot video, Jessie goes through all the emotions. She begins to break down in the beginning of the video and eventually is smiling and beaming with light. The whole song is about not comparing yourself to past lovers and even your past self. It’s about growing from all of your relationship experiences. At the end of the music video she gets up from her seat and turns off the camera, so it is almost like she is recording this for her new love. It is a video of genuine new love and how Jessie is ready to share herself because she has grown.

This song has some underlying story talking about abusive relationships and un-healthy relationships. She sings “believed him when he said he was honest, then blamed myself when I got hurt”, “My ex used to tell me no male friends, cut them off if you really care”, “My ex used to tell me he’s so chill, then steal my phone so I couldn’t leave”. These are real life situations that people find themselves in and it can be scary if you don’t know what you’re actually dealing with. Better yet how to deal with it. These are all signs of mental abuse and shouldn’t be taken lightly. If you find yourself in a relationship where your partner is showing signs of what Jessie J is talking about, step back and reevaluate the relationship. If you do think you could be in any physical danger at anytime get a bunch of your close friends to back you up and support you in standing up to your partner.

Not only was the “Not My Ex” music video and song a beautiful ballad of new love and how much you can learn from experiences like this but it is also a way of reaching out to the public about a serious matter like abusive and unhealthy relationships. I applaud Jessie J for coming out with this and being so honest with the whole world. I can see it really helping people coming to terms with what is happening in their lives.
